Under construction at Butser Ancient Farm 2014

The construction of the Llandegai House at Butser started with a request for information to Dr. Anna Z. Skarżyńska at the National Monuments Record of Wales, who very kindly sent me details of the excavations by Chris Musson and Frances Lynch, published in the journal Archaeologia Cambrensis vol 150 (2001), pp. 17-142.

This included the drawings of the ground plan of post holes.

From this I was able to plan the footprint of the house, and the interpretation of the evidence.

Due to the lack of direct evidence for slot trenches, I have decided to construct a simple wattle and daub wall.

There are enough post holes to represent the main frame, and from that the house size will be 13m long x 6m wide.

With a wall height of 2m for head clearance under the internal frame, and a roof pitch of 45 deg, this gives a roof-ridge height of around 5m.

The frame will be constructed from oak and ash, wattle walls of hazel, and the house thatched with water reed.

Alll joints of the frame will be notched with a simple chopping tool, and lashed with a spun vegetable fibre.
